For his audition performance, the 25-year-old performed an original song called ‘Almost Heaven‘ which talks about gay people like him and if they are allowed to go to heaven.
Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon works as a cleaner in his father’s Maryland church.
Before he wowed judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan with his voice, he spoke about his struggles growing up gay in the household of a pastor.
“It wasn’t always easy growing up as a pastor’s kid,” Harmon said in a pre-recorded interview. “I felt a sense of there are certain parts of me that do belong and there are certain parts of me that don’t belong.”
Harmon came out to his religious family three years ago.
“The consensus seemed to be this is not a path I should follow,” Harmon said of his family’s attitude on his sexuality. “There are times I do feel alone. The hardest part for me is seeing how difficult it is for my family.
‘Almost Heaven’ is about questioning whether there is a place for me and people like me in heaven,” Harmon said.
Although he auditioned with the song, we found the original Youtube upload which is even better!
